Comments / Recommendations
- Always assess a feed's physical characteristics first. Does it look and smell like it was baled at too high a moisture level, or has been weather damaged? How stalky is it? Does it have good leaf content? Is there any foreign material in it? Is it mouldy at all? Does it have an off odour? See Grains2Milk Buying feed Fact Sheet 4 for more information.
- SPECIFIC STATEMENT BASED ON RESULTS: Analysis indicates this sample is of poor nutritional quality for this particular feed. Its metabolisable energy content is lower than expected, its crude protein content is low to only moderate, and its high NDF content will limit feed intake. Not recommended for use in dairy diets.

- If feeding moderate to high amounts of this feed / milking cow / day, be sure that the total diet is balanced for energy, protein, minerals, and has an acceptable NDF level with adequate effective fibre. If unsure, consult a nutrition adviser.
- When buying fodder, remember to specify quality and supply terms as well as price, and confirm details in writing. See Grains2Milk Buying feed Fact Sheet 10 for more information. Always request a Vendor Declaration Form from the supplier to reduce the risk of contaminants / residues.
- Your hay supplies are too valuable to waste through poor storage. Keep under cover if possible.
- Feed wastage rates during feed-out vary between different feeding systems, and even within a given feeding system. Wastage rates may be very high (30% or higher!) when hay, silage or simple mixed rations are fed out on the ground. See Grains2Milk Buying feed Fact Sheet 14 for more information.

Looking Beyond the Price Tag
If buying this feed, how does it compare on value to alternatives? Remember - its not what you pay for your feed, it’s what you get for your money that counts. See Buying Feed Fact Sheet 4 for more information.
What do these terms mean?
- Ash
- A measure of the total minerals in the feed, being the ash which remains after the feed has been completely burned. Includes calcium, phosphorus, other major and trace minerals.
