Hay commentary

Hay commentary

  • Compared to last year’s wet season this year was rather dry, however rainfall statistics show this year’s wet season rainfall to be about average.
  • The comparatively dry wet season has been favourable for dairy farmers who have not needed to feed much hay and deal with sodden paddocks.
  • As a consequence milk production is up.
  • The benefit of the lower rainfall is some excellent quality hay that will be available for winter needs.
  • Hay demand for the  dairy and horse sectors is limited as pastures are productive and silage fills any small feed gaps for those dairy farmers who use silage in their programs
  • The market for Rhodes grass seed is now in a healthier state with seed now being sold to Argentina, this will help Rhodes grass hay in supply for domestic buyers.
  • The region is enjoying a good season with good growth from summer active grasses.
  • Overall demand expected to increase again as station weaning programs begin.
  • While reasonable hay making weather has allowed production of high quality hay, demand from horse buyers is eating into supplies.
  • The Atherton hay market is traditionally quite stable and prices are not expected to fluctuate
  • Better quality Rhodes grass hay made from the varieties, Katambora and Fine Cut, are generally higher in protein.
