Dairy Moving Forward

This project is a 'cross-industry' strategic planning process for R, D & E. Dairy Australia works with the government, universities, the CSIRO, and other dairy industry bodies to coordinate investment in R, D & E.

Through collaboration, Dairy Moving Forward aims to remove duplication from the R, D & E planning process, ensure maximum ROI from investment, and in turn, support our industry's competitiveness and sustainability.

Program Manager Ross Bawden talks through the key objectives and benefits of Dairy Moving Forward...

There are a number of initiatives under the Dairy Moving Forward umbrella, including direct infrastructure investment, research support, human capability building, facilitating the ongoing industry planning and fore sighting to facilitate the industry taking advantage of future opportunities.

The initiative is an industry led and supportive of the national PISC and PIMC agricultural RDE strategy development framework. The dairy initiative is likely to increasingly link to the other industry and across industry initiatives.

The initiative is governed by the Dairy Moving Forward Committee. The committee includes representatives of:

  • Australian Dairy Farmers
  • Australian Dairy Products Federation
  • Dairy Australia
  • Department of Primary Industries Victoria
  • Geoffrey Gardiner Foundation
  • Universities involved in Dairy Research
  • United Dairy Farmers Victoria
Current Status

This section provides a snapshot of the work being undertaken and the current status in the five research domains and design area of Dairy Moving Forward. This work follows the priorities confirmed at the March 2010 workshop.

Background

The key programs

The five Dairy Moving Forward research areas and the relevant program managers are as set out in the table below. Program Managers have been holding workshops and consulting widely to refine the research priorities. Part of this process will be to ensure integration across program areas and that the design element is clearly articulated.

Latest updates

Each of the Program Managers presented their draft reports to the Steering Committee in late September. Further refinements have been made to the report and  the executive summary. The Program Managers will continue to consult with the industry on the findings in the report.

PISC/PIMC Endorsement of DMF strategy

In late 2009 PISC and PIMC endorsed the DMF strategy. This is not the end of the process as there is still much work to be done – indeed of necessity it will be a ongoing process of collaborative strategy development, prioritization and alignment of capability even after the results of the current work are implemented.
