Kids' Party Tips

Here are our top tips for creating a winning kids cooking party.

What to cook

  • Limit the number of recipes the kids will be cooking to 1 or 2 otherwise you’ll end up with chaos and a mountain of dishes. Also, when picking the recipes be mindful of the kids’ skill level, recipe cooking time and cooking space available to you e.g. limited oven space.
We suggest recipes that allow kids to use their hands and get creative such as:
    • Mini pizzas: Pre make some pizza dough and then the kids can roll it out and add their favourite toppings.
    • Baby sushi rolls
    • Cupcakes or cookies: Kids can decorate them with coloured icing, sprinkles, smarties, lollies, the possibilities are endless!
  • Remember, while the point of the cooking party is for the kids to cook and then eat the party food, things may not always turn out so make sure you have some other party food ready to go on hand.
  • When baking food in the oven, place each child’s item on a separate piece of baking paper and write their name on it.

Pick a theme

  • Pick a theme for the party, this can create more of an atmosphere and direct the type recipes and decorations.
    We suggest:
    • A gorgeous tea party: think pastels, ribbons and flowers.
    • An Italian feast: use red, white and green colours, checked table clothes, wine bottle candle holders.
    • A tropical island banquet: use bright tropical colours, fairy lights, fishing nets and lots of flowers and fresh fruit.
    • A teddy bear picnic: depending on the weather this can be inside or outside. Use picnic rugs, cushions, colorful helium balloons and of course heaps of teddies!

Get help

  •  Enlist a friend or two to help you out on the day, it will make life just that little bit easier!

Activities

  •  Don’t forget to think about having activities for the kids whilst their creations are cooking.
    Some ideas include:
    • Buying enough kids size calico aprons for all the children and get them to decorate them with fabric paint, textas etc. For a cheaper option you could use chef hats or wooden spoons to decorate.
    • Bobbing for apples- always great fun!
    • A good old egg and spoon race (hard boil the eggs to prevent messy accidents)

Goodie bags

  • Don’t forget the goodie bags! Kids love to take home a little something from their day, especially to show off to their brothers and sisters. Instead of filling these just with lollies think about including a kids’ apron or chef’s hat (this can be the product from an earlier activity). Add a few recipe cards they can try out at home, perhaps include one from the party. Additionally, you could include any leftovers from the day that can be easily transported such as cookies or cupcakes.
