The People in Dairy
Dairy Australia's 'The People in Dairy' program is designed to help farmers improve how they attract, deploy, retain and develop the people they need to achieve the strategic vision they have for their business.

People are the core to success on dairy farms. Over 32,000 people work on or own dairy businesses. Their skills and energy are critical to the farm’s profitability and resilience. If you take your employees and family with you in developing and running your farm, the business is most likely to provide wealth and work-life balance, and have the capacity to grow if you want it to.
As Dairy Australia has explored this process with farmers, consultants, HR specialists and researchers, three fundamental keys to success have emerged:
- design farm systems to fit people, rather than trying to find people to fit the systems
- increase efficiency and productivity by ensuring the right people do the right jobs at the right times
- place great value on having effective working relationships
Dairy Australia now works with farmers to provide resources to help with these challenges.
The People in Dairy program has also initiated projects to:
- help advisers support farmers with ‘people issues’
- build the industry’s ability to attract and retain people
- develop future farmer leaders to influence public policy and manage industry investments
