Cutting fertiliser costs
Farmer profile:
- Owners: Casey and Bonnie Taylor
- Location: Heathmere, South-West Victoria
Situation:
South-west Victorian farmers Casey and Bonnie Taylor saved $20,000 on fertiliser through an expanded soil testing program and dividing their property into farm management zones. The work was inspired by their involvement in the second phase of the Reducing Soil Acidification Through Nutrient Management project, run by WestVic Dairy. WestVic Dairy's Nutrient project helped the Taylors
save $20,000 on fertiliser.
Action:
"Running more soil tests allowed us to direct the fertiliser to where it was really needed," said Mr Taylor of Heathmere. "Our spending was better directed to correct any problems identified by the tests.
Results:
By participating in the WestVic Dairy nutrient program, the Taylor's saved $20,000 on fertiliser. As Casey states "We had about half a dozen paddocks which were a bit lacklustre and the yield didn’t seem quite right and we found we were down on potash, which we were able to correct."
