Extension VIC-SA

Background:

The viability of the dairy industry will be determined by its ability to learn, adopt innovation, and change at a pace that ensures it remains internationally competitive in ways that are economically, socially and environmentally sustainable.

Innovation and learning provide the basis of competitive advantage. It is therefore essential to create an environment that fosters innovation and learning within the industry. The primary role of extension is to facilitate and influence the pace of learning and the adoption of innovation.

Project objective:

To assist dairy farmers in their decision making, and their ability to be profitably sustainable in a complex operating environment.

Project scope:

The Dairy Extension Centre (DEC) was established by Dairy Australia and the Victorian Department of Primary Industries in 2005 as a “virtual” centre of extension capability and program delivery. The Centre operates within the DPIV and delivers extension services for Vic dairy farmers. It has 8 main work areas:

  • Profitable feeding systems
  • Managing dairy cows
  • Business management
  • Dairy nutrients
  • Connecting dairy communities
  • Water and climate change
  • Project governance
  • Emergency management

Outcomes/benefits:

Improve productivity/profitability for Victorian dairy farmers by accelerating the adoption of competitively advantageous innovation.
