Americas trade policy

Background:

Australian farm gate returns are heavily influenced by international market conditions and the opportunities open to Australian exports.

As a major world producer (market double the size of world trade) US dairy policy and industry developments can have major impacts on both world market sentiment and the commercial viability of Australian access rights to the US market.

The emergence of Latin American dairy producers as world market players also affects the future balance/direction of international dairy trade.

Project objective:

This project provides cost effective information and analysis of North and Latin American dairy industry developments and their implications for Australian export returns and sales. It also provides a platform for representing Australian dairy interests and positions in US policy debates and market access cases arising from domestic policy and regulation changes in North and South America.

Project scope:

Establish and maintain an network of information channels and contacts in dairy industries, agriculture, universities and government in North and latin America.

Regular reporting to Australian industry on developments in American markets and policy and their commercial implications for Australian dairy.

Representing Australian dairy positions in US policy debates including defensive actions aimed at offsetting negative impacts on Australian exports and prices of changes in North and South American access regulations.

Outcomes/benefits:

  • Cost effective information/analysis that supports local company business planning/assessments of world markets
  • A capacity to defend/advance Australian interests through timely representations on planned US policy changes and active support for Australian government negotiations
