China market development

Background:

The objective in Mainland China is to maintain growth trends and grow the market share of Australian dairy products. Industry activities demonstrate the ongoing commitment of Australian dairy to the market, enhance the trust of existing customers, and reach new customers.

Australia’s position in China is under pressure on several fronts including:

  • Third party FTA agreements that give (an expanding) commercial margin of preference to key Australian competitors (ie NZ)
  • Increased industry level targeting of specific product segments by overseas industries such as the US Dairy Export Council.

Hong Kong and Taiwan markets are relatively stable and mature, but when supply from Australia is tight, it is important to maintain an industry presence to ensure that opportunities in these high return markets is not lost.

Project objective:

Maintain the trend to shift to more exports of value added products, and grow the market share of Australian dairy products in the market with a high growth of demand for imported dairy products.

Project scope:

Activities target senior managers or middle technical managers who play an important role in purchasing decision making and policy making in dairy manufacturing companies, trading companies, food service, bakery, retail, government and industry organisations.

In a lot of cases, middle technical managers in manufacturing companies are promoted after training. Activities for them include seminars and workshops, scholarships in Australia and follow-up alumni events, industry conferences and individual meetings.

Outcomes/benefits:

Growth of export sales to China contributes to farm and industry profitability. This market growth will reflect an active preference for Australian product based on the project having:

  • Provided sound platforms for Australian dairy firms to develop new customers
  • Educated customers in the three markets on key Australian dairy products
  • Identified and promoted additional and better applications of Australian dairy ingredients, especially cheese and butter
  • Promoted increased use of Australian dairy ingredients in the markets; Built and maintained a strong communication network with the markets
  • Provided an industry level review of developments in Australia and around the world
