EU trade policy

Background:

Australian farm gate returns are heavily influenced by international markets and the opportunities open to Australian exports.

As a major world producer (with a domestic market more than double the size of world trade), EU dairy policy and industry developments have major impacts on both world market sentiment and the commercial viability of Australian access rights to the EU and third country markets.

Project objectives:

Provide cost effective information and analysis of EU dairy industry and policy developments and their implications for Australian export returns/sales.

Provide  a platform for representing Australian dairy interests and positions in EU policy debates and in market access cases arising from changes in EU domestic policy and regulations.

Project scope:

Establish and maintain a network of information channels and contacts in dairy industries, agriculture, universities and government.

Manage the operations of DA's representative office in Brussels, and undertake regular reporting to Australian industry on EU industry/policy developments and their implications for Australia.

Undertake and support direct representation of Australian dairy positions in EU policy debates including defensive actions aimed at offsetting negative impacts on Australian exports/prices in third markets due to the application of EU/third country agreements and regulations.

Outcomes/benefits:

Support Australian company and farmgate returns on exports via:

  • Cost effective information/analysis service that supports local company business planning/assessments of world markets.
  • A capacity to defend/advance Australian commercial interests through timely representations on planned EU policy changes and active support for Australian government negotiations on these issues.
  • A capacity to positively influence the direction of European agriculture policy reform.
