Dairy Innovation Australia Limited (DIAL)

Background:

Dairy manufacturing relies on high quality and safe products using the latest technologies and systems to remain competitive. This can be made possible by a critical level of investment in research & innovation, and allowing seamless adoption of outcomes from innovation projects.

It is not practical or advisable for individual manufacturing companies to fund innovation projects, platform technology investigation or scoping studies on their own when there are significantly better options for collaboration in sharing the funding, resources and the outcomes in the precompetitive area of innovation.

Project objective:

Accelerate the delivery of an innovative, internationally competitive, profitable and sustainable Australian dairy manufacturing industry.

Provide Australian manufacturing with a strong integrated R & D capability that contributes to global competitiveness.

Project scope:

Dairy Australia addresses this need by co-investing in the innovation hub called Dairy Innovation Australia Ltd (DIAL) in partnership with dairy manufacturers. Our focus is delivering effective technology transfer of research into the industry and development of skills and capability. DIAL operates its research activities under eight 'clusters'. Cluster steering committees that oversee the investment and the projects comprise of representatives from Dairy Australia, DIAL and member companies.

The clusters are:

  • Cultures Cluster
  • Curd & Cheese Cluster
  • Processes of the Future Cluster
  • Powder Processing Cluster
  • Products of the Future Cluster
  • Quality Cluster
  • Resources Cluster
  • Thermal Processes Cluster


Each cluster contains several projects designed to meet the cluster objectives. 

Outcomes/benefits:

  • Effective adoption of manufacturing innovation and technology to improve a base level of technology and innovation that allows Australian dairy to remain competitive
  • Provide the critical mass required to build capability and develop leading edge technology
  • Each member significantly leverages its investment in pre-competitive research aimed at making it's operations more sustainable and profitable
  • Independent research hub (DIAL) provides greater ability to access federal and state funds
