Manufacturing sector collaboration for environmental sustainability

Background:

Sound resource management (RM) is vital to maintaining Australian dairy's competitive advantage - in terms of meeting domestic/international market requirements, maintaining reliable production levels, and helping shape community/regulatory expectations.

There is already strong support from the industry for the need to develop greater levels of collaboration, Dairy Australia will provide leadership, and actively encourage the industry to further work together in tackling these challenges.

Project objective:

To advance state-of-the-art practices, and the development of a culture in environmental sustainability across the Australian dairy processing industry. This will be achieved via the Dairy Manufacturing Sustainability Council (DMSC) to deliver effective transfer of knowledge, promotion of best practices, and guiding the development of new technology.

Project scope:

The council promotes industry work on sustainability, and provides a vehicle for technology transfer in relation to research by Dairy Australia, Dairy Innovation Australia Ltd. (DIAL) and other research outcomes from Australia and globally.

The council meets several times a year, and these meetings act as technology transfer forums and a network for the exchange of ideas on current issues facing the industry.

Outcomes/benefits:

Sound resource management is vital to maintaining Australian dairy's competitive advantage. The prime activities of DMSC in environmental sustainability and the outcomes from the council work are:

  • Promote the work of the industry both the research activities of DA and the individual companies, and measure the improvements through the establishment of benchmarks.
  • Influence the research activities by identifying and initiates research and assisting with in-kind support through steering committees and providing demonstration sites for technology transfer.
  • Educate & extend knowledge and communicate through workshops & publications and shared case studies
  • Create awareness of best practice through the identification of key tools and supporting bench mark studies
