Evidence & science
Need/issue:
A growing population and competition for natural resources means farmers are no longer guaranteed consistent access to low cost natural resources. Growing resource scarcity will require increases in efficiency if dairy farmers are to remain competitive against other sectors.
The Australian dairy industry is responsible for 1.6% of our GHG emissions. Society increasingly expects agriculture and associated food processing companies to reduce emissions. The industry requires knowledge, monitoring tools and management strategies to reduce emissions.
Governments are looking to policy solutions as a way of facilitating resource efficiency. In the absence of good evidence based there is a significant risk of inappropriate policy being implemented.
Program objective:
Improve industry competitiveness through improved knowledge of nutrient loss to improve on farm nutrient use efficiency. Identify strategies to reduce GHG emissions without loss of productivity. Generate evidence based science to inform policy development and implementation.
