Managing supply chain food safety & intregity issues

Background:

The regulatory environment is constantly evolving, and there is always the potential that changes may increase the regulatory burden for Australian producers.

The Australian dairy food safety system consistently delivers safe dairy produce. The industry seeks recognition of the safety/integrity of the dairy production system from farm to consumer by regulators, customers and consumers. This should reduce unnecessary regulatory burden and enhance market access through removal of technical barriers to trade.

Project objective:

Actively promote the integrity of the dairy industry's food safety system to ensure that the industry's “bank of goodwill” is acknowledged in advance of issues that could lead to negative outcomes.

Project scope:

This project aims to promote the integrity of the dairy food safety system to international markets, government regulators and industry stakeholders.

It includes the development of communication materials (DVD, booklet, website) providing information about the safety and integrity of the national framework for food regulation in the Australian dairy industry.

Outcomes/benefits:

The Australian dairy food safety system consistently delivers safe dairy produce. This minimises the risk of unnecessary regulatory burden, and helps enhance market access through removal of technical barriers to trade. Specific target outcomes are:

  • Recognition by the domestic and international communities of the integrity of the Australian dairy food safety system
  • Recognition of the industry’s whole of chain approach to food safety
  • Increased confidence that current food safety measures are sufficient (subject to continual risk analysis and identification processes)
  • Reduced risk of international markets requiring separate regulatory requirements.

More specifically:

  • Continuous positive feedback from DA’s community monitoring program on the importance of dairy food safety
  • EU review endorses Australian Milk Residues Analysis (AMRA) monitoring program
  • Positive feedback from importing countries in response to the Food Safety Regulations brochure
  • Number of requests for the brochure, distribution, emails and website hits
  • DA monitoring program continues to provide positive feedback on safety of dairy products
