Career pathways & resources

Need/issue:

Dairy Australia fields many enquiries seeking information on careers in dairy. Similarly there is an expectation that students, careers officers and parents can find this information. To compete with other industries that are providing clear information and pathways, the dairy industry needs to improve its national and regional strategies.

When asked “what major challenges were expected in the future” in the 2011 Farmer Survey, 15% of those currently employing labour mentioned labour availability, cost and/or quality.

Workforce development in dairy manufacturing (like all industries in regional centres) is emerging as a challenge. Leadership is essential in ensuring collaboration among manufacturers.

Promoting and rewarding innovation in dairy manufacturing is critical to ensure that the industry remains innovative, competitive and sustainable.

Program objectives:

  • A clearly visible national careers pathway strategy developed/promulgated with web based resources accessible.
  • Support regional labour market engagement strategies with the approach to be determined in with RDPs.
  • Provide supporting tools, web resources and communities of practice operating across Australia, connecting to key stakeholders.
  • Facilitate initiatives that support the workforce needs of manufacturers and instigated collaboratively with manufacturers.
  • Attract university graduates into manufacturing and provide the theory, practical and commercial aspects of dairy manufacturing.
