Career pathways & resources

Background:

Dairy Australia fields many enquiries seeking information on careers in dairy. Similarly there is a community expectation that students, careers officers and parents can find this information. In order to compete with other industries that are providing clear information and pathways, the dairy industry needs to improve its national and regional strategies.

When asked “what major challenges were expected for the future of their enterprise” in the 2011 National Dairy Farmer Survey, 15% of respondent currently employing labour mentioned labour availability, cost and/or quality (without prompting) Additionally, 5% nominated labour as their greatest challenge.

Project objective:

Provide a national careers pathway strategy with support for local enabling through resourcing, in collaboration with each Regional Development Program (RDP).

Project scope:

This project will build on the work of other initiatives to provide a national careers strategy with support for local enabling through resourcing, in collaboration with each RDP, a regional careers coordination resource.

A strong alignment with a NCDEA strategy to drive traineeship and accredited training uptake across the dairy regions will be encapsulated. National support will include coordinator networking and sharing of best practice together with the further refinement and development of web based resources.

Outcomes/benefits:

Labour availability is a core driver of profitability and sustainability. This project will deliver:

  • A national careers pathway strategy developed and promulgated with web based resources readily accessed by individuals.
  • Agreed engagement strategy at a regional level to be determined in consultation with each RDP, with regional relationships built in line with regional workforce development strategies.
  • National supporting tools, web resources, communities of practice operating across Australia, connected to key regional and national stakeholders.
