The People in Dairy

Background:

The dairy industry is experiencing significant restructuring. Once primarily reliant on family members, farms are increasingly employing people other than owner-operators – currently at 72% of farms up from 34% just 6 years ago. There is increasing demand for higher levels of farm management skill, with large farms demanding managers and experienced production supervisors.

If farms fail to provide workplaces that are attractive, rewarding and efficient, their ability to achieve sustained business success will be severely limited.

Project objective:

Ensure dairy businesses have the tools, processes and support to build their capacity around managing the people on their farms.

Project scope:

The major thrust of this project is to ensure that dairy businesses have the tools, processes and support to manage people on their farms. The project has a particular emphasis on serving the large/growing part of the farm sector.

Outcomes/benefits:

Farm workplaces that are attractive, rewarding and efficient enable farmers to manage thier people effectively, and build sustained business success. Specific project outcomes include:

  • Farmers have clear, consistent, relevant information and resources available on people management
  • Advisers have increased capacity to support farmers on people issues
  • Industry programs have integrated appropriate people elements into their technical messages
