Key points from Setpember 2011 update:
The international market has been remarkably steady considering EU and US economic turmoil. Demand has been resilient, but supply increases and wider financial and currency market uncertainty will drive dairy export returns for the outlook period.
Dairy Australia is maintaining its $5.10 - $5.50 kg MS forecast range for southern full year prices, however softening commodity prices and Australian dollar strength are pushing expectations toward the lower end of the range.
While farmers remain confident overall, regional differences in attitude and outlook remain. Farmers surveyed in late August report little change in the number of cows milked for the 2011/12 season. However, Dairy Australia is forecasting a 1.5% increase in milk production, largely reflecting improved seasonal conditions.
