Lifting the Lid on School Lunches

 

mil_05.jpgNational Healthy Bones Week has been a joint initiative between Dairy Australia and Osteoporosis Australia for the past 14 years, highlighting the important role of dairy in the development and maintenance of healthy bones and prevention of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a condition in which the bones lose calcium, become fragile and tend to fracture more readily.

Diet and exercise are the most modifiable, non-pharmacological lifestyle factors which can impact upon bone health. As dairy is a rich source of well absorbed calcium, it can play an integral role in bone strength.

However, dairy foods - such as milk, yogurt and cheese - provide more that just calcium - they contain a package of nutrients. In addition to calcium, dairy foods contain protein, phosphorous, magnesium, zinc and potassium - nutrients also associated with bone health. The contribution dairy makes to bone health is one of its key attributes.

A glass of milk, a tub of yogurt or two slices of cheese all provide around 300mg of calcium.

By increasing your daily calcium intake to meet the new recommended levels, you will be helping protect yourself and your children against fragile bones and osteoporosis.
