Dairy Australia established Regional Development Programs (RDPs) in all the major dairying areas of Australia in the early to mid-1990s.

The objective was, and remains, to drive innovation in research and extension throughout Australia’s dairying areas through the use of regional knowledge and skills.

Now mature and independent entities, the eight RDPs are co-ordinated and managed by the regions to improve local and national productivity, prosperity and sustainability. Funded by Dairy Australia, the RDPs also secure other state, federal and community contributions.

What regions are covered?

Dairy Australia’s investment

In 2004/05, Dairy Australia is investing a total of $4 million in RDP activities. Dairy Australia distributes the total funding it allocates to the RDPs according to the litres of milk produced per region.

Most, but not all, of the projects through the RDPs receive core funding from Dairy Australia. Many other organisations also contribute funds to the RDPs. Because they are independent, the RDPs are able to connect at a regional and national level and attract additional monies to the dairy industry through co-investment. Dairy Australia encourages joint projects as long as they meet clearly identified industry needs.

In 2003/04, the eight RDPs delivered the following activities with a total investment of $13,591,149 ($4 million from Dairy Australia and over $9 million from other organisations):

Total funding Projects funded Projects initiated Projects completed Events held and dairy farmer attendance
$13,591,149 171 103 94 456 events, 10,020 farmers
