Who can apply for funds?
Applications are judged on the perceived benefits to the Australian dairy industry and potential for success.

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT (R&D) PROJECTS
Dairy Australia accepts applications for Research & Development projects from individuals and organisations worldwide.

Applications should be made by the organisation conducting the proposed research. For example, applications from tertiary education institutions should be submitted through their central office or research secretariat.

Where several organisations are conducting research together, one organisation should take responsibility for the project and subcontract part of the research to the other organisation(s).

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT
For these training projects only Australian citizens and permanent residents are eligible to apply.

What activities are supported?
Dairy Australia may support funding applications that address one or more of the 3 Key Objectives as set out in the Dairy Australia Strategic Plan.

Dairy Australia's research activities are primarily managed within 4 Portfolios. For more information regarding the Programs and Sub-programs managed within these Portfolios, go to The Research Portfolios section.

Research policy
Dairy Australia places considerable emphasis on investigators working with dairy industry groups to develop priorities for R&D. We often commission projects in areas identified by the industry as high priority. The commissioning process depends on the nature of the project but, in general, the most appropriate group(s) is invited to prepare a submission on the specific subject. Normal assessment processes, including peer review, apply to all proposals.

Length of research projects
Most projects run for between 1 and 3 years.  Longer projects may be considered in exceptional circumstances.

Application deadlines
A list of current Application Deadlines for Dairy Australia funding is available in this section.

Benefit Cost Analysis
Dairy Australia is committed to investing in R&D that is beneficial to the Australian dairy industry. One of the best ways to ensure this is by evaluating R&D projects and programs. An important component of this is a Benefit Cost Analysis of new project applications.

When submitting a full application, you will be required to conduct a Benefit Cost Analysis and include details of the analysis in the full application.

Dairy Australia provides software and instructions on how to perform the Analysis. See the Benefit Cost Analysis section.

(Note, Benefit Cost Analyses are not necessary for studentships, general training and development, or sponsorships).

Applications to more than one R&D corporation
If you are applying for joint funding from two or more R&D corporations, you should determine the most appropriate ‘lead’ corporation and prepare the funding submission in the way directed by that corporation. For example, if Dairy Australia is being asked to fund more than 50% of the project, then we should be considered the lead corporation. On the other hand, if we are being asked for less than 50% of the total cost, we will accept proposals in the format sent by other corporations.

You should check with the lead corporation to determine whether it distributes copies of your funding submission to other R&D corporations or if you are expected to do this. Please inform all the relevant parties that you are seeking joint funding.

Where you can get help
At any stage during the preparation of your application, you are encouraged to approach the appropriate Dairy Australia staff for help. They can advise you of the types of projects that are likely to be supported. Such discussions may be helpful in preparing your Preliminary Application or before finalising the Full Application.

Dairy Australia’s Portfolio Managers have overall responsibility for managing all Programs within their Portfolio. They are supported by Portfolio Co-ordinators and, in some Programs, by Program Managers and Co-ordinators.

  • For project administration, contact the appropriate Portfolio Co-ordinator.
  • For technical information, contact the appropriate Portfolio Manager or Program Manager.
  • For additional details refer to the Guide for Applicants

Go to The Research Portfolios section for the relevant contact details.
