What is the Dairy Extension Centre (DEC)?
Established in October 2005, the DEC is a virtual centre that pulls together the resources for delivering crucial on-farm extension and development programs to Victoria’s dairy farmers so they can improve the profitability of their business.
The DEC was formed to ensure the continued delivery of on-farm services to dairy farmers. Its strategy and operation is directed by a group of investors and primary stakeholders (Department of Primary Industries (DPIV), Dairy Australia and United Dairyfarmers of Victoria) under the charter of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Dairy Australia and the Victorian Government.
Under the MoU, Dairy Australia and the DPIV invest annual funding in the DEC. This has enabled improved planning and management of extension activities for farmers and demonstrates the industry’s commitment to dairy extension programs offered by the DPIV.
Many of the activities and programs developed through the DEC are delivered under the Target 10 banner, which began in 1992.
How does the DEC benefit the industry?
The DEC provides Victorian dairy farmers with the extension capability they need to address key issues affecting on-farm productivity and viability. It accounts for 45 full time staff focused on dairy extension across Victoria.
Since its formation, the DEC has played a major role in providing farmers with vital drought support. It has provided key information about Exceptional Circumstances assistance as well as the status and location of feed and water supplies.
Under the Target 10 banner, the DEC has also delivered a number of programs to help dairy farmers address a range of issues including:
- Grazing management
- Dairy cow nutrition
- Soils and fertilisers
These programs have helped many farmers achieve major productivity and profitability improvements in their business, with some experiencing financial benefits of more than $20,000 a year.
