Animal welfare

Information on animal welfare in dairy and relevant links

The Australian dairy industry is making a substantial investment in animal welfare and is committed to ensuring its reputation for sound husbandry practices is maintained and promoted.

On farm animal husbandry practices are intrinsically linked with animal welfare. To deliver quality dairy products and safe food efficiently, dairy farmers must practise good animal husbandry and maintain their animals in peak condition. The very nature of dairy farming means sound dairy husbandry practices also deliver good animal welfare.

The Australian dairy industry has in place a National Dairy Industry Animal Welfare Strategy (NDIAWS).  The NDIAWS supports the Australian Animal Welfare Strategy which was developed by the Federal Government with the vision that “the welfare of all animals in Australia is promoted and protected by the adoption of sound animal welfare standards and practices”.

Duty of Care for Calves - Information Kit

Calves are an essential product of dairy farming and the reputation and viability of the dairy industry is dependent on their care and responsible management.  It is important that the management systems in place for bobby calves ensure that calves presented for sale adhere to animal welfare and food safety guidelines as specified in the National Vendor Declaration for Bobby Calves.  A kit has been sent to all dairy farmers in March 2008 that includes a range of information related to the husbandry and marketing of bobby calves.  The information provided in the kit is as attached below
