Artificial Insemination (AI) Technician
A professional Artificial Insemination (AI) Technician provides an insemination service to dairy cattle for those farmers who want access to a larger pool of genetics rather than using natural mating.   The successful AI Technician properly handles and thaws frozen semen to produce optimum results for each customer.  Many Herd Improvement centres offer refresher courses in these areas to keep the technician up to date on correct procedures.

Scope
Professional AI Technician are key people in the herd improvement organisations marketing efforts because they are in direct contact with the customers.  They are often asked for advise on which bulls to use and therefore need to be knowledgeable about bulls available.

Courses and Training
To become a Professional AI Technician, it is best to gain employment with a Herd Improvement Co-Operative and from there complete the Professional AI Accreditation.

You can also qualify as an AI Technician.  This enables you to artificially inseminate your own dairy herd or that of your employer's.  To do this, you need to attend a four day course.
