Dealing with Today: Planning for Tomorrow
Dealing with Today: Planning for Tomorrow is helping irrigated dairy farmers across the Murray Darling Basin address the challenges of the current season and supporting them in making longer-term business decisions.
It is targeted at irrigated dairy farms located in the Murray Darling Basin from Queensland through to South Australia.
Activities are designed and delivered in collaboration with existing regional service delivery networks to ensure initiatives are tailored to meet specific needs.
Activities
Some examples of our activities include:
Regional development programs in the Murray Darling Basin choose which activities suit local needs, so topics will vary from region to region.
A number of the activities on offer will include information about government funding and services available to you that may assist with the decisions you need to make on your farm under the current constraints.
Taking stock taking action
Taking Stock: Taking Action involves sitting down with an experienced consultant on a one-to-one basis to see how your business is travelling and to help work through the important decisions on your farm.
Taking Stock: Taking Action builds on the previous initiative, Taking Stock - not only providing for a physical and financial assessment of farm performance but also allowing for a discussion surrounding the employment and people strategies relevant to your farm. You have two sessions with a consultant, held in the privacy of your home. The first session develops an action plan and the second provides follow up to see how things are progressing and to provide help with any hiccups. More
Climate change workshops
Climate change workshops give you the information and insight you need to dairy in a changing climate. Our interactive farmer forums will discuss the current understanding of climate change and its implications for the dairy industry, your region and your farm. The workshops run for about four hours.
Buying feed workshops
Buying Feed workshops look at the opportunities and risks involved in managing feed purchasing, quality, supply and price. We’ll cover the options available and how to develop an effective feed purchasing strategy. More
Seasonal updates
Seasonal updates provide farmers and service providers with current information on key issues affecting dairy businesses such as water and weather outlooks, feed prices, and availability forecasts, milk price and market updates.
We’ll also let you know what support is available for dairy farmers in your area.
Many dairy farmers will be familiar with Seasonal Updates as they have been run in previous years.
Flexible Feeding System Farm Walks
These farm walks provide an opportunity to see a range of flexible feeding systems in operation. They last for about two hours and are followed by lunch where you can catch up with fellow farmers to share ideas and experiences.
Growing cereal crops workshops
If you are considering growing cereal crops this season, you can’t afford to miss our Growing cereal crops workshops. They’ll cover how cereals can fit in a dairy feeding system, suitable varieties to sow this autumn, and how to grow and manage cereal crops.
Dealing with Today Planning for Tomorrow is managed and implemented by Dairy Australia and delivered through Regional Development Programs in the Murray Darling Basin. It is supported by the Australian Dairy Industry Council and industry organisations and service providers including state departments of primary industry; milk companies, state farmer organisations and private consultants.
FUNDING
Dealing with Today Planning for Tomorrow is funded by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Irrigation Industries Workshop Program which provides support for five peak industry bodies (dairy, horticulture, wine, rice, and cotton) in the Murray-Darling Basin. The program provides irrigators with access to free practical, expert advice in their local area to improve water use efficiency, minimise production losses, and improve business and production planning.
The Australian Government and industry partnership ensures that irrigators get advice specific to their region, sector and circumstances to inform decisions about their future.
STEERING GROUP
Dealing with Today Planning for Tomorrow is led by a Steering Committee of key industry people chaired by Allan Burgess Chairman of the Australian Dairy Industry Council. The Steering Committee ensures that programs are delivered and the right people engaged to give you the very best management, financial and market information in the coming year. |
