Financial visibility key in challenging times

26 June 2025

With dry conditions and rising costs, South-west Victorian dairy farmers Alysha and Ryan Conlan have taken steps to take stock of their financial position and plan for this season.

“This year’s been really dry, and we didn’t have the autumn break we all hoped for. So, we’ve been really focused on what we need now while also budgeting for the next 12 months, and then looking four or five years out,” says Ryan.

Adapting their business management experience from the construction industry, Alysha and Ryan are focused on building long-term resilience on their 300-cross herd dairy farm at Elingamite, near Cobden.

With rising input costs, climate-related challenges and fluctuating milk prices each year, the Conlans’ financial visibility is more important than ever. And knowing their numbers has helped keep critical farm operations on track.

“Whether it’s budget planning to guide our spending or being prepared for a chat with the bank, it helps having the right information handy,” Ryan says.

“It’s especially helpful during high-stress times – knowing what we can and can't spend within our business means we reduce financial pressures and some of the stress,” adds Alysha.

Sam Andrews is one of Dairy Australia’s regional Farm Engagement Leads working directly with farmers to help them navigate challenges and ensure they are well supported to have a successful farm business.

“Among the many pressing things that we have faced in South-west Victoria is the unseasonable 18 months of dryness in the region,” says Sam.

“Right now, a lot of farmers are feeling the pressure. It’s tough out there, but sometimes even a small step – like getting a clearer picture of where things sit financially – can help you feel a bit more in control.”

Sam encourages farmers to make the most of the range of tools and support available through Dairy Australia – whether it’s a quick check-in using simple budgeting tool like Farm Business Snapshot or taking a deeper dive through programs like Farm Business Fundamentals or DairyBase.

“It doesn’t have to be complex,” she says.

“When under pressure, even 15 minutes spent to look at a few key numbers can help clarify your next steps and support decision-making – especially when you’re facing challenging conditions.”

Sam adds that taking time can also bring clarity to the areas to managing those areas that are immediately critical to keeping farm operations running smoothly.

Ryan and Alysha say the support from Dairy Australia has been a great asset to their farm business.

“It has been fantastic and shown us where the strengths and opportunities are within our business,” Alysha says.

“It has helped us make decisions really confidently about what we can spend now on essentials for our farm and what we may be able to invest in for the long-term.

“All those little bits of knowledge and adjustments you can make in your business can add up to a lot at the end of the year,” Ryan adds.
