Regional support teams activated for flood and drought recovery
24 June 2025
Droughts and flooding rains have challenged farmers throughout this season, prompting Dairy Australia to redirect its regional teams to provide targeted, on-the-ground support to areas most in need.
Over 40 per cent of Australia’s dairy farms are currently affected by drought or dry conditions, despite some recent rainfall across Southern Australia, whilst 137 farms were impacted by flooding on the New South Wales Mid-North Coast and Lower Hunter regions in May.
Dairy Australia’s regional team in New South Wales has directly connected with all flood-affected farmers to better understand the impact on their farms and wellbeing and are providing on-the-ground support to farmers. In the immediate aftermath of the floods, the team prioritised sourcing fodder and activating veterinary and animal welfare support.
As the flood response moves into the recovery phase, the focus has shifted to providing support with business impact assessments, government grants and financial counselling, addressing animal health issues, and connecting farmers with mental health and wellbeing support services.
Alongside flood response, Dairy Australia also continues to support farmers affected by drought and dry conditions across inland and southern Australia.
Over the past 18 months, regional teams have worked with cross-industry collaborators to hold workshops and webinars to share advice and information from farm business professionals. These sessions bring together expert service providers to provide one-on-one guidance in assisting farmers with business planning and connect farmers with vital resources and wellbeing support services.
The latest initiative aimed at assisting farmers in drought-affected areas is a fortnightly series of webinars on dry season topics. The webinars offer farmers the opportunity to ask Dairy Australia and industry experts on topics like transition feeding and preparing for spring to maximising forage production and utilisation.
Dairy Australia hosted a National Drought Response Group Meeting in May to assess resource gaps, improve response efforts, and encourage information-sharing among key industry stakeholders across different regions.
With the situation in drought and flood impacted areas continuing to evolve, Dairy Australia is also continuing its important role of monitoring the situation and supporting advocacy efforts as well as engaging with government where required.
