Australian Dairy Plan



The Australian dairy industry is operating in a changing and challenging environment.

To navigate these challenges, farmers, processors and the broader dairy community need to work together and speak with one voice.

The Australian Dairy Plan aims to rally the industry to set a clear vision and purpose for the next five years and beyond. It will provide a blueprint for the industry to operate, which delivers to a collective strategy.

The development of the Australian Dairy Plan is being led by Dairy Australia, Australian Dairy Farmers, Australian Dairy Products Federation and Gardiner Dairy Foundation, with John Brumby serving as Independent Chair.

Over 1,500 farmers, service providers, processors, retailers, investors and other key stakeholders participated in nationwide consultation from May through to July 2019. This provided an opportunity for participants across the entire dairy to have their say on what is needed to create a more profitable, confident and united industry:

  • Profitable: Financially sustainable and profitable across the entire supply chain.
  • Confident: A sense of optimism and confidence relating to future success is felt throughout the industry, including competing at a local and global level.
  • United: The industry, right across the country, knows where to focus and where it needs to apply its collective efforts and voice to achieve this goal.

A draft plan was published in December 2019 and, following a period of industry consultation, it is expected to be finalised in mid-2020. Reform of industry structure is a key commitment of the draft plan and a Joint Transition Team was appointed to make recommendations. These were published in a report in January 2020 and industry engagement on structural reform is currently ongoing.
