Project: The risk of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Australian dairy cattle.

This project aims to assess the risk of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) introduction and spread within Australias dairy industry. The H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b strain has caused significant disease and production losses in dairy cattle globally and mild infections in farm workers. Although Australia is currently free from H5N1, Dairy Australia and Ausvet Pty Ltd, with support from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF), are conducting an evaluation to identify risks of H5N1 transmission between and within dairy herds. A major component of the project includes a comprehensive on-farm biosecurity assessment on 25 randomly selected dairy farms across Australia. The findings will inform practical recommendations to mitigate the risk of H5N1 entry and spread in the industry.
