Researching Continuous Forage Cropping for Dairy in the Murray Region Become Part of the Conversation

10:15am - 5.30pm

If you would like to see the new cross-industry research being undertaken across two trial sites in northern Victoria, exploring the importance of break crops in forage cropping systems, then this Roadshow is for you. Connect with senior researchers, farmers and industry representatives on important regionally specific fodder cropping research.

As dairy farms continue to transition their farming systems from grazing to mixed rotations, fodder production on farms is changing from pastures to annual cropping. Much of the cropping knowledge currently being applied is being adapted from cereal cropping expertise, which has different dynamics to the dairy industry. C4Milk is working to understand these differences and the key parameters for sustainable and profitable dairy forage cropping.

This event will explore the following C4Milk research items:

Impact of different break crop types and strategies for dairy

Sustainable continuous forage cropping and how it may impact soil health and sustainability

High feed value forage selection and what dairy farmers have to do differently to cereal cropping to meet their forage needs

Hear from Yvette Williams, Dairy Australia Murray Research & Innovation Coordinator as she provides insights into the importance of this research for in-land dairy and cropping systems.

Project partners Irrigation Farmers Network and Birchip Cropping Group will be showcasing the research and results captured from the trial sites.

This roadshow is the chance to get a first-hand look at research being conducted whilst connecting with other dairy farmers, cropping farmers and key industry researchers and representatives on regionally specific research.

6:30pm - 10:00pm

Come along and enjoy dinner and networking.

Amy Barber and Mark Bauer from Queensland DPI will present results relevant to Murray region from the QLD component of the C4Milk project including:

post-harvesting methods to increase nutritive value of sorghum silage crops

using manure and crop rotation to boost soil fertility and forage crop yields

assesment of different sorghum varieties with productivity benefits to dairy
