Grain Commentary

  • May rainfall: 7.2 mm (Avg: 115.0 mm)
  • Rainfall year to date: 28.9 mm (Avg: 203.9 mm)
  • Wheat: Steady ($295 to $305/mt).  Steady this week, despite the strength in east coast markets, conditions are still dry and although we are a long way from panic stations every week without rain will continue to push prices higher.
  • Barley: Steady ($295 to $305/mt). The situation here has not changed for some time but we will mention it again, supplies are tight and tightening and global demand is ongoing (driven by China), the result is well supported prices.
  • Lupins: Steady ($320 to $330/mt).  Steady this week, but given the direction we are seeing other commodities head and the lack of rainfall in recent times prices here look to be very well supported.
  • Oats: Steady ($195 to $205/mt).

Change in price is the change since the last report. Prices are estimates based on delivery to dairy farms with allowance for freight, storage, and marketing costs, but exclusive of GST. Wheat prices are for the relevant stockfeed wheat available in a region (ASW, AGP, SFW1 or FED1) and F1 for barley.

This report has been commissioned by Dairy Australia to provide an independent and timely assessment of grain and hay markets in each dairying region. It should be remembered that actual prices may vary for quality or other reasons.
