DairyTas Focus Farm Open Day 5th December
Focus Farm Open Day - 5th December 2018 - WIIFM!
Strong attendance was again seen at the Open day at Montagu last week, with almost 60 people in attendance.
The audience heard some thought provoking presentations from a selection of speakers who covered off a wide range of topics. The focus was about helping farmers identify what is in it for them in the current high grain price market.
Topics covered include:
Dairy Situation & Outlook (Global Market Indicators) – John Droppert – Dairy Australia
Future grain/input prices (How long will the pain last?) – Dean Lalor – Rural Bank presenting Profarmer and Australian Crop Forecasters information
Feeding cows profitably (marginal approach) – Basil Doonan
Assessing your options (Taking Stock) – Basil Doonan from Macquarie Franklin, Dave Field, focus farmer & Liz Mann, DairyTas
Taking care of the team (Mental health) – Ruth Fisher , Rural Alive & Well
Keeping creditors informed (Bank view) – Donna Avery, ANZ.
Farmers present took the opportunity to ask questions and enjoyed the discussion. There was discussion around grain prices and the relation to global forces and the impact that the AUD has on the grain prices in Australia, the data presented indicates that the prices may remain high for the foreseeable future, likely beyond June, 2019.
Lively questions and discussions resulted from the marginal approach to feeding dairy cows presentation by Basil Doonan. The presentation highlighted the return on feeding grain to low producing cows and feed substitution situations.
