Launch of Dairy Pre Employment Program

TAFE NSW, Dairy NSW, and Subtropical Dairy Collaborate to Launch Dairy Pre-Employment Program

A unique opportunity is on the horizon for those interested in entering the dairy industry. TAFE NSW, in partnership with Dairy NSW and Subtropical Dairy, is launching a five-day Introduction to Dairy pre-employment program in Casino this May. This initiative aims to meet the rising demand for entry-level dairy support staff and pave the way for employment opportunities in the industry.

The program offers a hands-on introduction to the dairy sector, equipping participants with practical skills and insights essential for working on dairy farms. Participants will benefit from:

  • Comprehensive dairy-specific training sessions
  • Industry networking opportunities
  • Exposure to potential job openings

Belinda Baily, head teacher of Agribusiness at TAFE NSW, highlighted the program's role in providing foundational skills for newcomers. “We’ve collaborated with Dairy NSW and Subtropical Dairy to create a course that offers participants a strong start in the dairy industry,” said Baily.

Completing the program earns participants units towards a Certificate II in Agriculture (Dairy). This recognition facilitates further studies in dairy farming. The program also provides valuable industry connections and support to aid participants in advancing their dairy careers.

Molly Handsaker, a graduate from the pilot program in Kempsey, is a testament to the program's effectiveness. With support from the government’s Storm and Flood Industry Recovery Program, Molly secured employment at a local dairy farm and enrolled in a Certificate II in Animal Care with TAFE NSW. “The program bolstered my confidence and taught me essential livestock handling and milking techniques. I’m thrilled about my career prospects in the dairy industry,” shared Molly.

The pre-employment program is open to individuals aged 15 and above who are Australian or New Zealand citizens, permanent residents, or humanitarian visa holders.

Laura Matthews, Dairy NSW Workforce Attraction & Retention Project Officer, expressed excitement about the collaboration's potential to expand dairy opportunities statewide.

"With TAFE NSW's partnership, we're opening doors to the world of dairy farming for aspiring newcomers across NSW, ensuring accessibility and fostering a thriving dairy community," said Matthews.

Supported by TAFE NSW, Dairy NSW, and Subtropical Dairy, this pre-employment program offers aspiring dairy farmers a solid foundation for a rewarding career. Whether participants aim to explore entry-level roles or pursue further studies, this initiative serves as a valuable stepping stone towards success in the dairy industry.
