The Dairy Australia 'Euthanase Livestock' short course is designed for dairy farmers, saleyard operators and other livestock handlers to help them deal with destruction of sick, injured and unsaleable cattle in a professional and humane manner. It has been delivered for a couple of years nationally and has been well received by farmers.Participant feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
The course provides theory and practical skills to safely destroy calves, downer cows and other livestock by a variety of methods, with the emphasis on use of captive bolt devices. The methods taught are evidence-based and align with animal welfare legislation in all states of Australia. No animals are harmed during the workshop but all participants are expected to take part in practical exercises using appropriate props to demonstrate their competency.
The course is delivered only by Dairy Australia-trained veterinarian, Justin Schooth, from Gympie Vet Services/Apiam Animal Health.
This course is being supported by Dairy Australia and there isno costassociated with attending. The course is currently being delivered as an extension activity and as such there is no longer a requirement to enrol through a training organisation.
