Nutrition Fundamentals is a 2-day course to help dairy farmers build skills and confidence in managing dairy cow nutrition. The fundamentals course teaches information around the basics of feed and digestion, and what that looks like for cow health and production. Participants will develop an understanding of fundamental concepts around feeding cows and gain access to tools and information to help make nutrition decisions for their farm system.
Day 1 will be classroom based, while Day 2 will have a practical on farm walk.
Topics covered include:
The digestive system of the cow
Understanding DM (dry matter), ME (metabolizable energy), CP (crude protein) and fibre in feed
Seasonal nutritional requirements of the cow
Stock feed ingredients and feed quality
Minimising feed waste
Using field observations to monitor diet
Young stock nutrition
Profitable feeding of a balanced diet.
As discussed during previous workshops, this course will have a slightly higher focus on nutrition for reproductive performance.
Attendance of both days is required. Lunch and morning tea will be provided.
