Smarter energy use on Australian dairy farms

Dairy Australia secured federal funding for energy assessments on 900 Australian dairy farms. The project, 'Smarter energy use on Australian dairy farms', received funding from the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency.

The project rolled out energy assessments on farms to identify opportunities for farm businesses to save on energy bills. Each farm received a personalised assessment plan which provided recommendations for dairy farmers to use energy in the smartest, most efficient and cost effective way.

Cutting costs via an energy assessment plan:

Personalised energy assessment plan could include:

  • Changes to management practices
  • Optimisation of current equipment
  • And/or capital investment

œDairy farmers are under time pressure at the best of times and don'™t have the luxury, or often the resources and information to find the best way to save money by improving their energy use, the Department stated. œThis will definitely provide the help they need.

The project developed and disseminated targeted information resources including an on farm assessment tool and train industry providers to undertake the energy assessments.

The project was also supported by the Australian Dairy Industry Council, milk processors and state agencies.
