Nutrition Fundamentals is a two day workshop designed for senior dairy farm employees, managers, owners and industry consultants. It provides a practical understanding of ruminant nutrition, feed nutrients, rumen function, cow health and energy requirements to make informed feeding decisions to improve cow performance and profitability.
Participants will gain knowledge and skills to:
- Understand the digestive system of the dairy cow, including factors that influence feed intake.
- Interpret key feed quality measures, including dry matter, metabolisable energy, crude protein and fibre.
- Recognise the changing nutritional requirements of dairy cows throughout different stages of production and seasons.
- Assess the quality and nutrients of different feed types and evaluate their suitability to influence animal performance.
- Develop profitable feeding strategies by balancing dairy cow diets and minimising feed waste.
- Evaluate feed options based on nutrient value and cost and prepare budgets to make informed decisions.
