Peter Thurn appointed Director of WestVic Dairy Board

06 October 2025

WestVic Dairy has welcomed Peter Thurn as its new Specialist Director, announced at the Annual General Meeting on 7 October.

Peter brings over three decades of experience supporting Australian dairy farmers in herd and genetic improvement. Peter spent 34 years at Genetics Australia, where he led the national breeding program, before joining DataGene in 2021 as Stakeholder Relations Specialist.

“I’ve worked in the dairy industry all my life and saw this as a good opportunity to give back,” Peter said.

He hopes to use his experience and skills in strategic planning and stakeholder engagement to support WestVic Dairy in continuing to deliver value to farmers in the region.

Research plays a vital role in whole farm improvement, and I want to ensure research continues to support a sustainable and profitable industry in Western Victoria,” he said.

Peter is passionate about helping farmers make informed breeding decisions, acknowledging that investing in genetic gains can take time to deliver results.

“Genetics requires a leap of faith. You make decisions today but see results years later. That’s why clear communication and trust are so important, Peter said.

“As a board member, youre there to support, understand and guide. It’s all about continuing to engage with farmers and building strong relationships so WestVic Dairy can support them in the best way possible.”

Peter replaces Rhonda Henry, who steps down after eight years of valued service. Farmer directors Lucy Collins, Brooke Lane and Ulke De Kleine were reappointed for three-year terms.
