Staff spotlight: Chris Millar - Farm Engagement Lead

With more than 30 years’ experience across the dairy and livestock industries, Chris Millar brings extensive on-farm knowledge to his role as a Farm Engagement Lead with Dairy Australia Murray.
Before joining the team, Chris spent almost 18 years supporting farmers with livestock nutrition, dairy diets, and grazing management. He also knows firsthand what it takes to run a dairy business, having operated a 240-cow dairy farm with a business partner for seven years.
We caught up with Chris to learn more about his role, experience and what he enjoys about working alongside Murray dairy farmers.
What inspired you to join Dairy Australia?
I really enjoy working with dairy farmers and helping them achieve their business goals. Working with Dairy Australia gives me access to the tools, resources and expertise that can help farmers work towards those goals.
What do you enjoy most about working with farmers?
I enjoy hearing farmers’ stories - how they’ve built their business to where it is today and, importantly, where they want to take it next. Hopefully, I can help in some way to support those future plans.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My focus is being out on farm, and I generally aim to visit two or three farms each day. Those conversations help me understand what’s happening within individual businesses and where Dairy Australia may be able to provide useful support or connections.
What’s one lesson from your experience that you’d share with farmers?
The most successful farms I’ve worked with tend to plan well in advance and then stick to those plans. It can also be difficult to stay across every part of a farm business - from nutrition and agronomy to finances – so don’t be afraid to reach out to people who specialise in those areas, especially when unexpected changes call for quick, well-informed decisions.
What’s the best advice you’ve received?
Don’t over-promise and under-deliver.
